When a Movie Interior Finds Its Way Into Your Home - my movie inspired home office
My entire blog is about movie interiors that inspire me. And every once in a while, as I get around to photographing different corners of my own home, I like to show you what happens when those
interiors make their way into real life.

Sometimes it’s completely intentional. I see something in a movie, fall for it, and later find myself recreating some version of it at home. But often, it happens without me realizing it. Movies get into our heads and settle somewhere in the background, and then years later we start arranging a room and think: Wait. I’ve seen this somewhere before.

That’s exactly what happened with this little corner of my home office — the place where I write this blog. I took a photo of it one day and suddenly recognized something I hadn’t consciously copied at all: the kitchen window in You’ve Got Mail. Somehow, Kathleen Kelly’s apartment had been sitting in my memory all along, quietly influencing the way I made this space feel.
And honestly, I was a little stunned when I realized it.

Experiences like this — when movies you’ve seen years ago suddenly seem to break through the subconscious and start influencing the most ordinary parts of your life are part of what pushed me toward studying the anthropology of everyday life. I’ve learned so many fascinating things about why we get so attached to interiors in movies, what kind of people tend to notice them, and what kinds of differences in the way our brains process information might make some people watch a movie and follow the plot, while others get completely absorbed in the tiny domestic details happening in the background.
More about that soon.
