I'm going to look at the interier of the townhouse in Brooklyn from the Nancy Meyer's movie "The Intern", starring Anne Hathaway and Robert De Niro today.

interior from a movie

The actual house was located in Clinton Hill in Brooklyn and it's a classic brownstone with hardwood floors, tall walls with mouldings and beautiful hung windows windows.

The interior, like in many of New York homes is pretty eclectic, as it should be since it's the most diverse city in world, right? There are farmhouse pendant lights in the kitchen, mid-century modern style sofa in the living room, European cottage shelf decor and linens.

Color palette in the interior is also quite far from being minimalistic. French blue door paint, mustrad yellow sofa, kids drawings on the wall and plenty of bright accents, like fushia flowers, tropical fruits, herbs and plants in terracota pots and so on. I literally like looking at this interior every time I start having doubts and think if I went overboard with the amount of color in our home.

So, let's point out the most obvious designer pieces. The chandelier in the living rom is Branching Bubbles by Lindsay Adelman. If you look up "bubble chandelier" you'll find tons of dupes, copies and inspired lighting in this style.

There's another famous lamp in that same room, which we can spot on the console table by the wall. It's Bubble table lamp designed by George Nelson for Herman Miller in the fifties. George Nelson is famous for quite a few designer furniture objects, like marshmallow sofa, ball clock, coconut chair, etc., which are considered to be iconic mid-century modern style pieces.

The original fixtures were made from a sturdy steel frame but the shades were fashioned using translucent white plastic spray developed by the U.S. military at the time and looked very delicate. Nelson, according to many sources, was inspired by a set of silk-covered Swedish lamps that provided soft light to the interiors. He created a whole assortment of these lights in various spherical silhouettes. These days there's an abundance of table lamps in similar design, including the ones with paper shades by Ikea.

The living room in this movie is simply stunning and the layered lighting looks so incredibly inviting.

Throughout the house we can see a fair amount of famous bentwood thonet chairs in black cane. Created with steam bending wood technique, which at that time was revolutionary because of how it allowed manioulate wood and create elegant shapes and curves, they new standards in design.

These days thonets are so wide-spread in interior design that you can see them anywhere from cafeterias to royal palaces. Same goes about buying them - lots of options from vintage to brand-new in all price variations.

Another famous designer chair can be spotted at the office of the main charachter played by Anne Hathaway. Just like in the movie "The Other Woman" her style and personality were reflected in spaces she inhibited.

acrylic chair

This is the acrylic Ghost chair by Kartell Louise, which has inspired many brands to create their versions of weightless and space undemanding furniture.

The kitchen has Nancy Meyer's recognized touch: open shelving, large pendant lights, abundance of pottery, wooden accents and plants.

Most of these things or similar are very Pottery-barn-like, so we're not going to stop here but how pretty!

Textile and linens in this interior are also fascinationg: layers, stripes, flower print, quilted and knitted throws, etc.

And the last word - about mouldings, just because pre-cut and pre-primed mouldings have become such a big thing lately. This scene in the tub where moulding are right at the eye level is just the best motivation to go on Amazin and get some and make that statement wall in your house.
